25th Annual 2011 Run 4 Fun - December 10, 2011 Festival |
The culminating event for the LA84 Foundation’s Run 4 Fun program was held on Saturday, December 10 at Griffith Park. More than 1, 220 boys and girls from 38 middle schools participated in age-group races over a 2-K challenging cross-country course.
This was the 25th year of the Foundation’s Run 4 Fun program. The 10-week program is offered to middle schools in Los Angeles County. More than 5,000 youngsters at 39 middle schools took advantage of this free program.
Run 4 Fun introduces Los Angeles County middle school youngsters, ages 10-14, to the sport of distance running. The program is held from September to December and utilizes existing physical education classes and after-school sessions to provide students with an introduction to running for fun, fitness and competition.
To qualify for the culminating Run 4 Fun Festival, runners completed 800-meter, 1-kilometer and 1-mile training at their schools submitting times for each race. At the Festival, the first ten-place runners in each race category were recognized. The top-three schools in each division and their top runners also received awards. The overall school champion was Milliken Middle School, repeating last year’s feat. The trophy will be presented to Milliken at a school assembly early next year.
